Stigma story

I’m a 75-year-old, uneducated Italian, who grew up on the streets of New York City. I saw a lot of violence growing up, as I was well related to organized crime. I saw a lot of life and death situations. Up until 8 years ago, I believed that mental illness was ONLY for weak-minded people. I was totally wrong.

You can change life by moving away from a place, but you carry the blackness with you mentally. I considered myself a business man, who had many different types of businesses, such as after hour clubs, etc. and even building a business in Puerto Rico in the 60’s. I have been poor to financially stable. I have many days of depression, and try and live by saying to myself—this too shall pass! There’s an inspiration that states, “Those who love you are not fooled by the mistakes you have made. Or the dark images you hold about yourself. They remember your beauty when you feel ugly; your wholeness when you are broken; your innocence when you feel guilty; and your purpose when you are confused.” NEVER stop wishing, hoping and dreaming. Happiness is the way of life and we have to mentally believe that. It all takes place in our minds.

What could someone have said/done to make it ok?

I have gone through many therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists before finding the one that I felt could TRULY understand me and my Life. What we believe determines how life works for us. It all takes place in the mind. I have many stories to tell, hoping that some of them could help. Fix your attention on positive goals.
