Mary’s story

“I have trouble telling people because I don’t know how they will react.”

What kind of stigma did you experience/observe?

I have trouble telling people because I don’t know how they will react. I had an aunt give me a blank stare and change the subject. It was typical response.

Stigma story

I was let go from a job that didn’t seem to want me to get help. They just wanted me to go away so I was let go. Had many extra visits to the psychiatrist trying to get my bipolar under control and deal with the loss of a job. My psychiatrist doesn’t’ feel that I can work because I can’t handle stress. My career is down the toilet. I was a Certified Medical Assistant.

What could someone have said/done to make it ok?

How can we help you? Is there anything we can do for you? Do you need us to call someone?
