Shaneka’s story

“Autism is not easy to live with but with perseverance you can live a full and happy life.”

What kind of stigma did you experience/observe?

I have autism so I have issues with social skills. In elementary and middle school I was always excluded from friend groups and teachers just made work at an easier level for me like I was less of a person. Other students would just avoid me and give me stares.

How did you overcome this experience?

Once I got into high school I started taking more rigorous classes and I was passing them. I thrive when given any challenge. I started taking advantage of more opportunities and just started to be my funny self. Soon I started to gain more friends and school work is more to my satisfaction.

Autism is not easy to live with but with perseverance you can live a full and happy life.
