Jenny’s Story
“Rather than people assuming that I am going to be impossible to work with or a threat to society based on my diagnosis; I would like it if people asked me more about my diagnosis of BPD.”
What kind of stigma did you experience/observe?
Borderline Personality Disorder.
Stigma story
I have struggled since I was 14 years old with anxiety, depression, eating disorders and I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder in my early 20s.
Unfortunately, there is a negative stigma towards Borderline Personality Disorder. There is even a stigma among professionals since some feel that “borderlines” are difficult to work with and treat.
One thing that bothers me is how the media portrays BPD. Those in the media with BPD have done some sort of horrible crime – murder. Not everyone with BPD is going to murder someone. I don’t feel it’s fair to lump all people living with borderline in one group.
What could someone have said/done to make it ok?
Rather than people assuming that I am going to be impossible to work with or a threat to society based on my diagnosis; I would like it if people asked me more about my diagnosis of BPD. People would find I am not what they think I am.
