Joe’s Story

“Talk to someone who you trust.”

Share your stigma experience.

I started going through a divorce and I started counseling. During the counseling I realized I have been suffering from depression for most of my life. I remember trying to kill myself at 10 or 11 years old by riding my bike into traffic. I was just diagnosed with major depressive disorder, adjust disorder and anxiety with conversion disorder. This has been one heck of a trip for me and I was always of the mindset that if you are depressed then you need to cheer up and do something you enjoy. I have since realized that it is not that easy so I am so sorry I thought that. I am coming to terms with what I have and how I will deal with it. I will probably always be suicidal but I have to try and fight it.

How did you overcome this experience?

I am still working on trying to overcome this for myself and for my kids.

Even if you just think something might be off, just talk to someone who you trust and talk to a doctor.
